Use a high-resolution source — at least 1600 pixels on the long side, ideally 2000+ so the crop has headroom and zoom stays sharp.
Lock the aspect to 1:1. eBay's search-result and gallery thumbnails are square; non-square uploads get center-cropped automatically.
1600×1600 unlocks eBay's zoom feature. 800×800 is the absolute minimum for the gallery. 2000×2000+ produces the crispest zoom.
Export as JPG (eBay's preferred format) at 80–90% quality. PNG is accepted but produces unnecessarily large files for photographic listings.
eBay allows up to 12 photos per listing for free, or 24 with an eBay Store / eBay Plus subscription. Minimum size for the gallery is 500×500 pixels, but 1600×1600 is required to unlock the zoom feature (which is what most buyers expect on used electronics, collectibles, and motors). Maximum file size is 12 MB per image. JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF are accepted; JPG is preferred.
For new electronics, fashion, and beauty items, a plain white or light gray background is strongly recommended — it matches how new-condition items are presented and reduces buyer hesitation. For vintage, used, antique, or collectible items, showing the item in its natural setting (wood table, fabric, or display shelf) is fine and often expected for authenticity. eBay does not enforce a specific background color.
eBay disallows watermarks (except eBay's own), seller logos or URLs overlaid on the photo, borders or text added in editing, and stock photos when selling used items (you must show the actual item being sold). Generic stock photos are allowed only for brand-new items where the manufacturer's image is appropriate. Photos taken from another seller's listing are not allowed and can lead to suspension.
JPG (.jpg) is eBay's preferred format and what eBay's docs recommend. JPG produces smaller files for photographic content, which means faster uploads and faster gallery loading for buyers. PNG is accepted but most listing photos do not benefit from PNG. eBay's hard limit is 12 MB per image regardless of format.
Yes — for anything with visible condition (used electronics, fashion, collectibles, motors), use as many photo slots as you can. Recommended angles: front, back, both sides, top, bottom, any damage or wear closeups, serial number / brand stamp for authenticity, and accessories included in the sale. Listings with 8–12 photos consistently sell faster and at higher prices than listings with 1–2 photos.
