FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cropping a JPG reduce its quality?

Re-encoding JPG always loses a small amount of quality because JPG is lossy. We keep the quality slider at 90 by default, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos. Set it to 100 for the closest match.

Will my JPG be uploaded to your server?

No. All cropping happens in your browser using Canvas APIs. Your JPG file never touches our servers — you can verify this in your browser's Network tab.

Can I crop a JPG and download it as PNG?

Yes. Use the format selector after cropping to switch the output to PNG. Note that PNG doesn't reduce file size for photos, so JPG is usually the better choice unless you need transparency.

What's the maximum JPG file size I can crop?

There is no fixed limit — the cap depends on your browser's memory. In practice, JPGs up to 50 MB or roughly 10,000×10,000 pixels work on modern desktops. Mobile devices may handle less.

Can I crop a JPG to a circle or other shape?

Yes, but you'll need to download as PNG to keep the transparent area outside the shape. For a perfect circle, see our Crop to Circle tool linked below.
