1:1 means the width and height are exactly equal — a perfect square. Any size where width equals height is 1:1, such as 600×600, 1080×1080, or 2048×2048.
Instagram recommends 1080×1080 pixels for square feed posts. This 1:1 size is sharp on phones, fast to upload, and won't be re-compressed as aggressively as larger files.
This tool crops — it never stretches. The 1:1 frame removes pixels outside the square but keeps everything inside at original proportions, so faces and objects stay correctly shaped.
1:1 is a square frame with four straight edges. A circle crop fits a circle inside that 1:1 frame and makes the corners transparent. If you want a round profile photo, use our circle crop tool instead.
You can download your 1:1 crop as PNG, JPG, or WebP. PNG preserves quality, JPG gives the smallest file, and WebP is a good balance for web use.
