Frequently Asked Questions

Why 1080×1080 specifically?

1080×1080 is the size Instagram uses for square feed posts — large enough to look sharp on Retina displays, small enough that Instagram won't re-compress it heavily. It's also the de facto standard for square album covers and avatars.

What if my source image is smaller than 1080×1080?

We'll upscale to 1080×1080, but quality will degrade because we can't invent detail. For best results, start with a source image at least 1080×1080 — ideally 2160×2160 or larger.

Does the cropped 1080×1080 image look stretched?

No. The frame keeps a 1:1 ratio and the source is cropped to fit, never stretched. If your source is, say, 2400×1600, we'll crop it to a 1600×1600 square first, then downscale to 1080×1080.

Will Instagram compress this image after upload?

Instagram will re-encode the image, which slightly affects quality. 1080×1080 is the size Instagram targets, so by exporting at exactly this size you avoid extra downscaling on Instagram's side.

Can I get a different square size like 2048×2048?

Yes — use our generic Crop to 1:1 tool and pick any output resolution. For 2048×2048 or 3000×3000 (Spotify album art), the 1:1 tool gives you full control.
